My thoughts. My daughters quotes. My feelings. What I like. My blog. :)
About a week and a half ago I received a letter from my daughters school, it was the results from a vision test they had performed at school by the school nurse. It was a referral to take her to the optometrist. They claimed that the vision in her left eye was bad, something that they had informed me about a year ago but I was a bit skeptic then. She was only 3 at that time and her pediatrician had already performed a vision test and claimed she was fine. I thought “she probably fooled around during the test, its nothing.” Well, this time I gave it some thought, it was the second time they told me this, and her pediatrician isn’t an optometrist, their test aren’t real vision test. So I decided to schedule an appointment with an optometrist and find out. We went to see the optometrist and found out that the school nurse was right. Alyssa was diagnosed with Amblyopia also known as “lazy eye.” Basically, Amblyopia is when her eyesight on one eye is weaker than the other and her brain starts using the “good” eye and ignoring the weaker eye so her eyesight on that eye begins deteriorating. I was completely bummed after I heard this. She was prescribed glasses with a really strong prescription on the left side. What Amblyopia requires me to do is patch the “good” eye to force her to use the “bad” eye. This way, her brain will begin using the bad eye and her vision will then begin improving. I’ve just started patching her right eye, it’s been 2 days now. I patch her for 4 hours a day. She doesn’t like patching and I am sure I wouldn’t like it either. It seems pretty uncomfortable and frustrating but I know that that is what is best for her so she has to do it. I really hope her vision improves fast; I have faith that it will. At first I was really sad, but as I researched about Amblyopia I also came across other vision problems that other kids have to live with at a very early age. The worse one being blindness. Although I felt helpless when I found out that my daughter has a vision problem, I knew that at least she has sight. Maybe her sight isn’t perfect, but she has it and I thank god for that!! With just a little help her vision will get better. We will continue her patching and have faith in god that everything will be fine. I love you Alyssa!!
Well, it’s almost 2am and my brain is about to shut so I will continue another day.
I promise to not give up! I will make you proud momma!
Out of no where Alyssa comes next to me and scratches my make-up, I look at her (mad of course) and ask her why she did that. She looks at me with a blank stare not knowing what to say. She continues to just stare at me with a sad face knowing she did something rude. So then I ask her “would you like me to pull out money from your piggy bank so I can buy myself a new one? (of course I wouldn’t though) she then answers very softly “yes” then says “I’m sorry” so sadly. I couldn’t help but smile and laugh because I wasn’t really that mad. and the thought that my 4 year old understood at the end that it was wrong and was willing to pay for it made me happy. Anyways, she then runs to the restroom and stands in the corner and begins to sob, I give it like 15 secs before I go in there to talk to her and explain to her that it’s not nice to ruin other people’s belongings and how she wouldn’t like it if it was her things. She seemed to learn a lesson today.
